Three times a year, during the off season the Eco-S participants get together and clear trash/waste from the ski slopes, to help ensure as little impact as possible on the environment.

During off-seasons, eco-s participants from all over Japan, get together on the slopes to help clean up the mountains and the surrounding environment. eco-s participants believe in taking a proactive approach. This is their expression of gratitude as snowboarders, for the global environment.

From what we heard here on the mainland, it was a magical day!

At Kalama Beach Club kids learned how to surf, stand-up paddle, boogie board and ride the waves on a massive group paddling mat.  At Kailua, the kids were trained in canoe paddling, life saving and beach volleyball.  For most of the kids, it was their first time getting professional instruction and being able to use most of the water equipment and quotes like, “It was my first time on a surfboard” or “I’m having so much fun I don’t want to go home,” reminded the crew of how great it is to support such an organization.

The staff at BGCH told us that after lessons, everyone chipped in and cleaned up the park and beaches, collecting nearly 200 pounds of trash in celebration of Earth Day (nice!).  Afterwards, lunch was provided by Duke’s Waikiki and Jamba Juice.  Always a hit, there was plenty so no one went hungry.

As you can imagine, the friendships made between kids from Clubhouses all across Oahu will be remembered for a long time. The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii is a Give Back Series partner of ours and we’re stoked to have been able to help…

Costa Mesa, Calif., May 1, 2012 — Further enhancing our New Future initiatives, Volcom today said the company is now participating in the UPS carbon neutral program. Participating in this voluntary program enables Volcom, with the help of UPS, to track company-wide shipping-related carbon impacts and mitigate them through 3^rd party verified carbon offset programs that address projects such as reforestation, renewable energy installments and the like.

“Participating in the UPS carbon neutral program is an exciting opportunity for us,” said Volcom’s President and Chief Operations Officer, Jason Steris. “We are proud to be able to make this service available to our consumers and retail partners, at no additional cost to them, and we anticipate that this will measurably aid us in our goal of offsetting our carbon footprint.”

How the Program will Work

UPS will quantify the carbon impacts of each shipment Volcom makes within the program. Consequentially, a destination-based fee ranging from $0.05 to $0.75 will be applied to each shipped package and then earmarked for the purchase of carbon credits, essentially mitigating the shipment’s carbon footprint. Volcom will cover the fee for all packages shipped to wholesale partners around the United States as well as to consumers shopping online at the brand’s e‑commerce store (shop.volcom.com). Volcom will also ship all packages to its domestic and international corporate offices, as well as to and from all U.S. Volcom retail stores, via the carbon neutral program.

UPS carbon neutral shipping is available to consumers on shop.volcom.com immediately, just in time to celebrate World Environnment Day. The program will roll out to Volcom’s corporate internal and retail shipments by mid-2012.

The UPS carbon neutral program adds to the many other consumer-facing efforts already in motion at Volcom. Last year, the company partnered with I:CO to launch a take-back program in its retail stores. These same stores currently are in the middle of a B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bag) campaign to encourage shoppers to ditch the disposable bag concept. These initiatives are in addition to the V.Co-logical Series and Give Back Series items that can be purchased in stores to support select environmental and social causes. According to Derek Sabori, Volcom’s Director of Sustainability, “While there’s still much more work to do, each move takes us one step closer to our goal of being a real contributor to a cleaner future.”

UPS launched the carbon neutral program in the U.S. in 2009, and has made strong advancements expanding the program internationally, making it accessible to the majority of its consumer base and corporate clients. As a part of the initial launch, UPS purchased high quality certified carbon offsets to fund a variety of projects such as the Garcia River Forest Project, overseen by The Conservation Fund and continues to extend its offset purchases to other regions worldwide. UPS also pledged to match the offset purchases acquired on behalf of customers for up to $1 million.

The calculation to measure the carbon (CO₂) impact of the customers’ shipments is based on current and historical operational data, including distance and transport mode and a comprehensive carbon inventory and the calculator used is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used international standard for carbon accounting and reporting. UPS’s proprietary calculation methodology and processes are verified by Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS). Additionally, the carbon offset process is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company.

As part of the Fuerza Chile! United for Clean Water Campaign, more than 600 volunteers gathered at 16 sites in nine regions on March 24th, 2012 to cleanup and restore beaches and coastal areas throughout Chile. In an unprecedented day of cleanups, volunteers removed nearly 9,000 pounds of trash and debris (more than 500 bags), cleaning and restoring beaches, river mouths, and estuaries along more than 15 miles of Chilean coastline. Following the devastating earthquake-tsunami of 2010, coastal communities throughout Chile rebuild, which also means continuing to care for the coast and ocean. United for clean water.

To celebrate Earth Day, we joined the crew from Earthpack for their beach clean up of the Newport Beach River Jetties area. It was a bit overwhelming to see how much trash is being dumped into one of our local spots. Many Volcom employees surf these fun waves and it was only natural to keep our frequented spot clean. We were joined by members of Surfrider Foundation and employees of Earthpack and it was impressive to see how much of a difference a few people can make in just an hour. What a great way to start the day, fun waves, perfect weather, and keeping our beaches clean.

In celebration of Earth Day, Surfrider Foundation, South Orange County Chapter is hosting with UCI Student Services, UCI Bookstore, UCI The Green Iniative Fund, UCI Theta Psi (Green Fraternity) a free screening of the award winning documentary, Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic?

A touching and often funny documentary on how we use and abuse plastic. The film, by award-winning director Suzan Beraza, is an eye-opening look at the environmental and public health dangers posed by the global use of disposable, non-biodegradable plastic products.

Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Barrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world. A panel discussion will follow to answer your questions and comment on the film.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Earth Day. I like what it stands for, but hopefully, if you’re reading this you’re with me when I say that, in all reality, every day must be Earth Day. Sounds a little cynical (which I’m not typically), so I might present this great summary by Kevin Whitton, our friend at GREEN Magazine, Hawaii’s Sustainable Living Magazine who did a great job of putting what I’ve been thinking, eloquently into words…

And rest assured, I’ll be posting a few of the things that you might want to consider doing on this coming Earth Day…Just to keep with tradition!

Last year, we had a stand out collection campaign from our friend D. Nachnani and his chain of stores, Coastal Edge. In fact, last year, Coastal Edge and the schools in their area were able to collect half of the amount we were able to collect overall, through all of our retail partners!

Stickers Went Out to Those Who Participated

Well, this year they did it again – only bigger!

This year, in conjunction with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the Coastal Edge Give Jeans a Chance Challenge was able to collect:

• Over 5,273 jeans and jackets this year from the 28,000 students that attend the 15 High schools in their region
• Over 5,180 jeans and jackets this year from the Northern Virginia School systems (over 3 hours away from the nearest Coastal edge)
• 1154 jeans and jackets from the outer banks high school
• Over 1,005 Jeans in the Va Beach Coastal Edges
• And then Kill Devil Hills Coastal Edge helped coordinate with the cities in the Outer banks to collect another 1,000 jeans

That’s a grand total of 13,612 Jeans and Jackets this year!! More than double what they were able to collect last year…

For that D., we salute you and here by crown you the 2011 KING OF JEANS! Congratulations, bud!
