Give Jeans a Chance, DIY: And the Winner Is…

As our Give Jeans a Chance campaign for North America 2011 slowly comes to an end, we are proud to announce the winner of our 1st Annual DIY (Do It Yourself) Challenge!

For the last 2 years, Give Jeans a Chance has been in partnership with the National Coalition for the Homeless and with our partnering retailers across the globe. This year, however, due to multiple inquiries and pleas to get involved, we opened it up to you…our New Future community so that everyone and anyone could get involved in the campaign. We challenged you to set up collection drives in your community, tell people about your campaign, collect jeans and jackets, deliver them to a local shelter of your choice, and document your journey. The deal was, we’d reward the organizer of the winning campaign, with a $1,500 grant to a school or non-profit of their choice as well as $500 in Volcom product and an opportunity to tell their story on Fuel TV! Our favorite two entries are here, but only one could be crowned the winner.

We set out to collect 50,000 pairs of jeans and jackets for the homeless this year, and while we’re still collecting counts from our US retail partners and our global Volcom family, 915 of those collected came from these top 2 finishers!

Congratulations to Terri Benedict and the Principal, Teachers and Students at Red Hill Elementary in Tustin, CA! Together the team there at Red Hill collected 661 jeans/jackets and donated them to Project Hope School Foundation.

A congratulatory 2nd place finish goes out to Lisa Manfredi and everyone at Davis Magnet School in Costa Mesa, CA. Together they collected 254 jeans/jackets and donated them to The Orange County Rescue Mission. They’ll receive a $500 check to their school PTA for their efforts!

Congratulations to everyone that participated, and thank you for helping us make this year’s GJAC, DIY Challenge a success!

Check back soon for more updates as our final counts for the drive start coming in…

  1. As the President of the Project Hope Board of Directors, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Volcom for not only serving as a wonderful example of corporate social responsibility, but also for providing a tremendous opportunity for young children to participate and become invested in, giving.

The amazing students of Red Hill Elementary have made a real and important difference in the lives of the students at Project Hope School. Every day that our students are warm in their jeans and jackets, their lives are better. In this, our students know that they are cared about and cared for.

Together, in giving, we can all live better lives.

Thank you Volcom and Red Hill Elementary for being leaders in this quest.

    Much gratitude,

    Jennifer Friend
